Deer, moose, and other animals are often drawn to the roadways with the onset of warmer weather. The risk of hitting an animal is greatest at dawn and dusk – which is also when it is hardest to see animals in the road. Keep your headlights on at all times and use your high beams when possible. Be on the lookout for yellow road signs warning of high danger areas and if you see one animal, slow down and assume there are more nearby.
Keep you and your passengers safe:
- Watch for reflective eyes of the deer and dark silhouettes of the moose.
- Generally, these animals are found in rural wooded areas but can be anywhere. Slow down if you see a roadside warning.
- Stay alert and be ready to act.
- If an impact is unavoidable, steer straight and brake. Release the brake just before impact so the front of your vehicle rises
